Take the first step to becoming an entrepreneur

An entrepreneur isn’t someone who has a good idea. An entrepreneur is someone who makes ideas happen. The problem is it can seem like a huge task getting from the idea stage to the functioning, profitable business stage. Like any journey it all begins with taking the first step; but just how do you know which direction to step in first? One of the best ways to overcome procrastination is to break the task down in to manageable parts. You may not be able to achieve your goal in one day but you can move a bit closer to it a step at a time. Write your idea down and then expand on it. The more you write, the clearer picture you will get of what you need to do, and the easier you will find it to make a plan. Now you have your idea on paper you have taken the first step.

So what happens next?

I’ve often wished that I knew everything I know now back when I started my first business. Unfortunately a lot of what we learn comes from experience. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t learn from others along the way too….

  • Borrow what you don’t know until you do know?
  • How did my competitor do it?
  • Who do I know that may help or give me some really great advice?
  • Become the go to expert in your field?
  • Set yourself Goals and make sure you achieve them.
  • Don’t be afraid to shout about your idea to who ever is listening?
  • Clarify and Refine your idea.

Don’t feel you should keep your business idea a secret until you have constructed a fool proof plan. Firstly, when it comes to business even the best laid plans need to be changed or adapted. Secondly, once you start talking about your business your motivation will grow. Sharing your idea will encourage you to keep working on it instead of putting it off. Other people will contribute ideas and thoughts which can help you develop your plan. You’ll start building a business rather than just thinking about it. Seek out opportunities to speak to people who can teach or advise you. The internet has given us access to so many sources of information. There are articles, videos, podcasts, blogs and webinars that can help you learn what you need in order to get yourself to the next stage. Talking to other entrepreneurs and business owners can really give you an insight into what pitfalls to avoid, what to look out for and where to find opportunities. Networking can also be a great way to make connections. A business coach or mentor can give you guidance and the benefit of experience. Empower yourself and put plans into action to help you find the confidence and skills that you need to make the decisions that are right for your business. Once you unlock your inner abilities and develop the skills you need, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your dream. As the saying goes; “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. The same applies to your business. Building it and shaping it will take time but don’t let it overwhelm you. It may seem daunting but with a good plan and sound advice you can achieve your goals.
